Wind River Teams with AdaCore on Safety-Critical ARINC 653 for use in Boeing 7E7
- Wind River and Ada Core Technologies software will be used in Boeing's new 7E7 Dreamliner, powering the Common Core System, which is the electronics and software backbone of the airplane.
- Ada Core Technologies' development tool, GNAT Pro High Integrity Edition for AE653, will be integrated into Wind River Platform for Safety Critical ARINC 653
Wind River Systems, Inc., the global leader in device software optimization (DSO), and Ada Core Technologies, the global leader in Ada 95 solutions and providers of the GNAT Pro Ada development tool suite, today announced that AdaCore's GNAT Pro High-Integrity Edition for AE653 has been selected as the Ada environment for the Wind River Platform for Safety Critical ARINC 653, to be used in the Boeing 7E7 Dreamliner Program.
The Wind River Platform with Ada Core Technologies' technology will be used on the 7E7's Common Core System, provided by Smiths Aerospace, which is the backbone of the airplane's computers, networks and interfacing electronics. The 7E7 Common Core System comprises approximately 80 to 100 applications running simultaneously which will control many of the airplane's avionics and utilities functions.
Wind River Platform for Safety Critical ARINC 653 is part of Wind River's Safe and Secure Program, which provides fully integrated device software platforms to meet the FAA's stringent safety certifications. Ada Core Technologies' GNAT Pro High Integrity for AE653 was developed specifically for Wind River Platform for Safety Critical ARINC 653. Based on the Ada programming language, Ada Core Technologies' development tools have been used extensively in recent years for safety-critical avionics applications because of its high levels of portability. With Ada Core Technologies' GNAT Pro High Integrity now built into Wind River's Platform for Safety Critical ARINC 653, Boeing and its other 7E7 suppliers will be able to leverage their existing software investments and easily adapt them to be used in the new Common Core System architecture.
"The partnership between Ada Core Technologies and Wind River will allow Boeing to take full advantage of the Ada technology, which has been so successful in making the 777 one of the safest and most effective commercial airliners. Both Wind River and Ada Core Technologies bring more than a decade of experience to the table and are in an ideal position to help ensure the success of the new Dreamliner," said Robert Dewar, President of Ada Core Technologies.
Designed to be the most advanced and efficient commercial airplane in its class and predicted to dramatically alter the future of avionics, the Boeing 7E7 Dreamliner will set new standards for environmental responsibility and passenger comfort. Developed to seat 200- to 250-passengers, the 7E7 will fly between 3,500 and 8,500 nautical miles at the same speeds as today's fastest twin-aisle commercial airplanes - the 777 and 747. Boeing began offering the new 7E7 to customers in early 2004 and is projecting that it will sell up to 3,500 7E7s over the next 20 years.
"Smiths Aerospace is pleased to be working together with Wind River and Ada Core Technologies for the new Dreamliner program. The strengths that these partners bring to this program will help to guarantee its success and we expect the Dreamliner to carry into the skies the most advanced avionics system ever seen," said Mike Grady, vice president, Civil and Military Air Transport of Smiths Aerospace.
"Wind River and Ada Core Technologies have partnered together many times to provide our customers with the tools and extremely reliable software they need," said Steve Blackman, senior director, business development, aerospace and defense, Wind River. "The Boeing 7E7 stands to be one of the most exciting aerospace programs Wind River has ever undertaken, and with our trusted partner Ada Core Technologies at our side, we're confident that it will be a success."
